いろいろもめたみたいだけど、結局、惑星の定義は
(1) A "planet"1 is a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, and (c) has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit.
というのが採択されて、(c) の軌道近隣の天体をたべつくしてるっていう条件をみたさないので冥王星は矮惑星*1に降格という、きわめて妥当な着地点。
新聞には教科書のかきかえが云々って記事がのってるけど、科学ってのは80年近く定着していたことでもひっくりかえることがあるっていう実例はすごく教育的だとおもう。
